Finished in 2016, architect Richard Murphy’s own home in Edinburgh is comparatively small. A mere 155 sq. m. on four floors it is squeezed onto a plot of 6x11 metres. And yet for such a small building it has had enormous publicity and many awards. The agendas at work are numerous: it is an exemplar of how to insert a contemporary design into a particular place in the 200 year old Edinburgh New Town; it has been an opportunity to experiment with energy conservation; it is a case study in how to achieve the maximum internal space in a limited envelope; and finally it also exhibits a rich genealogy of the many architects that Murphy admires from the Scottish Tower House to his personal hero Carlo Scarpa. In this book Richard Murphy both describes and explains the design including its development. The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs, sketches and detailed construction drawings.
